Engineered nanomaterials for artificial blood
Uncontrolled hemorrhage stands as a primary cause of death, particularly among individuals under 45, in both military and civilian contexts. While the use of clear fluids is required in treatment, it can critically impair patient recovery due to the lack of clotting and oxygen-carrying capacity. Thus, our research aims to develop blood-like nanomaterials that can be added into IV fluids. This work seeks to confer clotting ability and oxygen-carrying capacity, thereby doing away with the need for storing and transporting whole blood.
